In a last-minute twist, the highly anticipated release of Mammootty’s “Bramayugam” has been marred by controversy as the titular character’s name undergoes an eleventh-hour alteration. With just under two days until its theatrical debut, the film’s creators find themselves compelled to rename Mammootty’s character due to legal pressures.
A court petition filed by Punjamon Illam alleges that Mammootty’s portrayal as Bramayugam, known as Punjamon or Kunjamon Potti, practicing dark magic, tarnishes the family name. The family, represented in the Kerala High Court, demands the removal of the character’s name, asserting that the film’s portrayal was made without consultation and aims to defame their lineage.
Responding to the court’s directive, the production team of “Bramayugam” has altered the character’s name from Kunjamon Potti to Kodumon Potti. The film, a Malayalam horror thriller set in the 18th century, features Mammootty alongside Arjun Ashokan, Siddharth, and Amalda Liz, with direction by Rahul Sadasivan of “Bhoothakalam” fame. The narrative delves into the realms of dark magic and malevolent forces.
Jointly produced by Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios, “Bramayugam” has garnered attention for its unique theme and setting. At a recent press event, Mammootty encouraged viewers to approach the film with an open mind, underscoring its distinctive narrative and cinematic landscape.
