Controversy has erupted in the film industry as acclaimed director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan accused actor Tovino Thomas of interfering with the commercial release of the 2022 film Vazhakku. Thomas, who co-produced and starred in the film, has been at the center of a heated exchange with the director.

On May 10, Sasidharan took to his official Facebook page to allege that Tovino Thomas was blocking the film’s release over concerns that it might negatively impact his career. He detailed the production conditions, stating that Vazhakku was completed during the pandemic in just two weeks on a modest budget of Rs 50 lakhs, provided equally by Tovino Thomas and co-producer Girish Nair of Parrot Mount Pictures.

The director claimed that after the film was rejected by several festivals, he suggested an OTT release, which Tovino opposed, labeling the film as more suitable for festivals and not for the general public. Despite a successful showing at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), Sasidharan asserted that Thomas remained hesitant about a broader release, allegedly fearing career repercussions but promising to compensate with future projects.

The controversy escalated as Tovino Thomas responded to these allegations via an Instagram Live session on May 12, which he later shared on his profile. Tovino defended his position, emphasizing the need for audiences to hear both sides of the story. He recounted the challenging yet enjoyable filming process and expressed his respect for Sasidharan’s craft, noting his own significant financial contribution to the production.

Tovino acknowledged that while Vazhakku was rejected by some festivals, it was accepted into others, and he affirmed his belief in the film’s quality, stating his refusal to disown any of his projects regardless of their outcomes.

The public dispute has garnered widespread attention, with followers and fans eagerly awaiting further developments as both parties stand firm in their positions.
