Kantara 2: Decoding the Rs 100 crore budget for Rishab Shetty’s prequel to Kantara

What came next for Rishab Shetty after the incredible success of his most recent movie, Kantara? The question of whether he would do a sequel finally convinced him to give in, even though he already had a few films lined up as acting commitments and had previously announced a few directorials, including one called Rudraprayag and another with Shivarajkumar in the lead. Shiva, played by Rishab, vanished into the forest’s shadows at the end of Kantara, just as his father had done before him. The possibility existed to investigate what happened to Leela, who Shiva had left behind while she was heavily pregnant, as well as his father. But for his next, Rishab went a different way.

It turns out that Kantara 2 is a prequel, and although Rishab has not revealed the setting or the subject matter of his current project, it is believed that the movie will be set in 300AD and will examine the history of Panjurli, the boar avatar demi-god. If so, Kantara 2’s massive production budget can be attributed to its mythological setting and plot, which includes Panjurli’s relationship to Shiva and Parvathy. Rishab has reportedly been given carte blanche by Hombale Films to complete the prequel on a budget of between Rs 100 and 125 crore.

The film would not only require grand sets, but also great visual effects to present this tale, which should explain the massive budget, reckon netizens. Kantara 2, according to industry insiders, will go on floors in November in Mangaluru and will most likely be a summer of 2024 release.
