Renowned filmmaker Gautham Menon, known for his prowess in the acting realm of cinema, recently divulged intriguing details about his blockbuster 2008 film Vaaranam Aayiram during an exclusive interview on Touring Talkies.
In a candid conversation, Menon disclosed his initial casting considerations for pivotal roles, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics of the acclaimed movie. Contrary to popular belief, Menon revealed that he had contemplated casting veteran actors Mohanlal or Nana Patekar for the role of Krishna, portrayed by Suriya’s father in the film. Initially hesitant about the concept of actors portraying dual characters in a single film, Menon was persuaded by Suriya himself to embrace the challenge, ultimately leading to the actor assuming the role of his own father on screen.
Furthermore, Menon unveiled fascinating insights into the casting process for the female lead, Meghana. He disclosed that discussions were underway with Bollywood diva Deepika Padukone for the role. However, due to scheduling conflicts arising from her commitment to Om Shanti Om, Padukone had to regrettably opt out of the project, paving the way for Sameera Reddy to step into the role.
Reflecting on the casting challenges, Menon emphasized that despite initial setbacks, the eventual lineup seamlessly fell into place. Sameera Reddy brought a fresh perspective to her character, Simran delivered a standout performance in dual roles as Suriya’s love interest and mother, and Divya Spandana contributed to the film’s narrative with her distinctive portrayal.
Menon’s revelations offer a captivating glimpse into the intricate process of filmmaking, highlighting the creative decisions that shaped the cinematic masterpiece Vaaranam Aayiram.
